How do I calculate the total weight on a barbell?

Take the weight of the plates loaded on one sleeve, multiply that amount by 2 (accounting for both sides of the bar), and add the weight of the empty barbell itself. For example, if you have one 45 lb plate and one 25 lb plate on each side of a 45 lb bar: (45 + 25) × 2 = 140 lb in plates, plus the 45 lb bar = 185 lbs total.

Do you count the barbell weight when tracking your lifts?

Yes. You are physically supporting and pressing the mass of the bar. Standard gym conventions and sanctioned powerlifting rules always count the empty bar weight toward the official lift total.

How many plates are required for 225 lbs?

To reach 225 lbs on a standard 45 lb bar, you place two 45 lb plates on each side of the barbell (four 45 lb plates total). This is commonly termed "two plates" in gym terminology.

What do "1 plate", "2 plates", "3 plates", and "4 plates" mean?
